Precious gemstones and diamonds have been thought throughout history to bestow special power.
Gemstones have for centuriespowerful and mystical materials. Think of the history they have seen, before the existance of man. They saw many natural upheavals when the earth was going though it's first growing pains.
And since the history of man, these mysterious gemstones have been a part of, and viewed a lot of that history. Gemstones have been important to man from our beginnings and held their place in the history of man.
From earliest history since the advent of man, gemstones such as diamonds, rubies, emeralds and lots of other gemstones have at times have had exclusivity among the very elite. In early times in certain cultures, it was against the law except royalty to own or wear precious gemstones. Amethyst was greatly favored by royalty because of the purple color.
As time passed, precious gemstones were allowed among the aristocracy, and in time was made lawful for others who had the financial means.
Gemstones and their powers
The gemstones were looked upon with much awe by the various cultures and worn for a variety of reasons. To royalty they were a show of special privilege and gave them special power. Warriors had battle gear embedded with many of these gemstones, in many cases, the diamond, as it was believed they would make them invincible.
During the middle ages precious gemstones were not always not worn as adornment, but as a talisman that either protected the wearer or to give very special powers.
Many gemstones have been important in many of the beliefs of many cultures down through the ages. Ancient Egyptians and Romans linked the gemstone topaz to their god of the sun. An ancient Chinese legend told about pearls decending from the sky when dragons were fighting. Garnets were worn during the crusades as a result of the belief they had the ability to heal wounds and sickness.
The Christian religion was no different. There are a lot of times throughout the Christian bible when important happenings and symbolism were lent importance through the use of the many precious gemstones such as diamonds and rubies.
Down through much of history, gemstones have been included and worn by clergymen to exemplify many signs, including purity, chastity and a variety of attributes held to be valuable by their faith.
Precious gemstones and wide availability in todays market
Indeed, we are fortunate in this time in history that gemstones are allowed to all who have the financial means. Diamonds have become the standard for engagement rings and can be found in sizes and prices that will fit most budgets.
Pearls are different than the other gemstones because they are the only one of the gemstones that are brought into creation by a live creature, instead of being created within the earth's chemical makeup.|
The process of cultured pearls in the early 1900's has placed the pearl affordable for most budgets, unlike earlier times when they could only be obtained by, the wealthy and royalty.
When Cleopatra was a great power there is a story where she made a wager with Marc Antony claiming she could host the highest priced dinner ever held. As they sat with empty plates he considered how she could possibly win, when she crushed one of her pearl earrings, and plop it into sour wine which dissolved the pearl, and then she drank it. Estimates claim that, at current market prices that pearl could cost as much as $9,000,000. A very costly dinner.
When Rome was at it's peak in power and pearls had extreme value, one general is said to have financially backed an entire military campaign through the selling of just one pearl earring belonging to his mother.
Many of the gemstones are frequently worn as birthstones in rings, necklaces and other jewelry items as well as being featured in pieces of jewelry to give the wearer pleasure regardless whether that gemstone relates to your birthday or not. Each of these gemstones comes with a history of what special powers it will give the wearer.
Today we are priviledged to be delighting in the mystical and symbolic powers given by gemstones whatever our station in society. Unlike many material things we possess today, these precious gemstones are each distinctive, and unlike any other, nature has created each as matchless.
